Landing
“Da engines are slowing down,” Akwen announced. “Da walls should become transparent very soon.”
The group had gathered in the control room in excited and nervous anticipation. Although they were now used to the transitions the pyramid experienced during each journey, and although they had now survived four such jumps, they still found themselves nervously clutching panels or table edges in expectation.
Since leaving the Isthmus of Corinth, they had made one more uneventful trip. Landing in a deserted location on the western coast of Florida, they quickly scouted out the area. Finding no civilization, they filled whatever containers they could find with fresh water from a nearby stream, and added to their supply of fruit from the several trees they discovered. However, before they could do more, they were forced to seek shelter inside the pyramid as a large storm with near-hurricane-force winds slammed into the area. Their scouting expedition thwarted, they passed the rest of the time quietly as they waited for the core to recharge.
During that time, Rebecca tried talking to Jeffrey on several occasions, but to no avail. He either avoided her or, when she was successful at cornering him, he merely deflected her questions and stonewalled her. Finally, hurt and confused, she asked Dr. Eisenberg for advice. Although she could tell from the doctor’s troubled expression that he knew more than he let on, he refused to help her, merely saying this was between Jeffrey and her.
Giving up on her fruitless attempts to mend her personal situation, she focused instead on trying to convince Dr. Eisenberg of her theory. With more time on their hands, Rebecca was able to go into detail about her research, as well as show him the various documents and websites she had uncovered. After they had been at it for several hours, the doctor removed his glasses and began rubbing at his temples with his fingers.
“Are you okay?” Rebecca asked.
Looking up at her, he smiled. “Yes, I’m fine,” he said. “I’m just a bit overwhelmed. I’ll admit that I am very intrigued by what you have uncovered.”
Rebecca could barely contain her excitement. Noting her expression, Dr. Eisenberg held up his hand. “Hold on a second, Rebecca. You know I love you, so I have to be honest with you. I don’t want to give you false hope. I find your arguments compelling, but one doesn’t just throw out a lifetime worth of study and research in one afternoon. I need time to think about this.”
Her enthusiasm somewhat diminished, Rebecca was nevertheless thrilled at his response. “I understand. But consider this: You don’t have to throw out your study or research. The evidence remains the same. The fossils have not changed. It’s only how you view that evidence that needs to be changed.”
Replacing his glasses, Dr. Eisenberg smiled at her as he considered her words. “You have changed, my dear Rebecca. And I like what I see. Jeffrey sees it too, but he’s too stubborn to…Well, he’s just too stubborn,” he finished awkwardly.
Rebecca stood silently before her friend, her turbulent emotions revived by his words.
